Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has tested positive for coronavirus despite being considered “up to date” on his vaccination status, having received four doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

A statement released by his office on Sunday reported that the New York Democrat is experiencing “mild symptoms” and is also “fully vaccinated and double boosted.”

The statement added that Schumer will work remotely for the week as the Senate is set to return following the July 4 recess.

“Anyone who knows Leader Schumer knows that even if he’s not physically in the Capitol, through virtual meetings and his trademark flip phone he will continue with his robust schedule and remain in near constant contact with his colleagues,” spokesman Justin Goodman said.

The majority leader’s COVID-19 diagnosis comes amid a new surge of Omicron subvariants BA.5 and BA.4.  According to reports, the U.S. is average 100,000 new cases per day.

The rise in cases, even despite hundreds of millions of Americans being vaccinated against the virus, prompted Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director (CDC) Rochelle Walensky on Tuesday to claim that many once “fully vaccinated” Americans are now considered to be “undervaccinated” because they have not received enough COVID-19 “booster” injections.

“Many Americans are undervaccinated,” Walensky said. “Meaning, they are not up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines.”

“Not all people over the age of 50 have received their first booster dose. Of those who’ve received their first booster dose, only 28% of those over 50 have received a second booster dose. And for those over the age of 65, only 34% have received their second booster dose,” she explained.

Schumer is the most recent prominent Democrat to catch the virus despite being repeatedly injected with COVID vaccines.

Thus far, Anthony Fauci, Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, current Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, former President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Sen. Chris Murphy, Sen. Ron Wyden, have all caught COVID-19 in recent months and weeks.

In the non-governmental realm, liberal television host and prominent vaccine advocate Stephen Colbert, billionaire and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and regular Americans alike have caught the virus despite being vaccinated.
