Revolver News reported on Monday that Nevada Assemblywoman Heidi Kasama, who currently seeks to be elected commissioner in Clark County, has drawn negative attention from the state’s Republican grassroots over ethics complaints asserting she failed to disclose her interests in limited liability corporations (LLCs).
According to the complaints, which were republished by Revolver, Kasama did not acknowledge her roles at Kojima Nevada, LLC, or Kasco Investments, LLC, despite official state business filings that purportedly show she was the manager of both companies as recently as last year.
In her January 15 disclosure statement for this year, the outlet reported that Kasama listed only her eponymous LLC, without mentioning either Kojima or Kasco.
On the same day she filed the disclosure statement, Kasama loaned her campaign $500,000, which appears to be the single largest injection to her campaign’s coffers.
Revolver reported that Kasama’s campaign, “described the LLC filings as routine paperwork handled on behalf of her husband’s CPA clients when he was ill, stating that neither she nor her husband held any financial interest or ownership stake in the entities,” and characterized the two complaints as “politically motivated attacks.” The outlet reported that Kasama’s campaign said it will seek guidance from the Nevada Secretary of State.
In addition to the ethics complaints, the outlet reported that Kasama is under more fire from conservatives for her former position on the Finance Board of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) PAC, which regularly gives hundreds of thousands to support Democrats.
Since Kasama began serving on the Finance Board in 2017, according to Revolver, NAR PAC has spent more than $727,000 combined to support the Democratic National Committee (DNC), U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-11), and House Representatives Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY-14), Maxine Waters (D-CA-43), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5).
In addition to the PAC donations, NAR has been accused of courting Democrats to achieve its legislative goals. One lobbyist for the group is Sydney Barron, the former wife of U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), whose earlier House campaigns received more than $34,000 in NAR support.
On its website, NAR notably appears to support immigration, even as the Trump administration works both to curtail legal immigration and complete the mass deportation of millions of aliens.
“Many real estate markets in the U.S. rely on legal immigrants and visa programs for economic innovation, growth and development,” a NAR advocacy page states. “It is important that these programs remain viable for all users so that the recipients can engage in real estate transactions that help our members, clients and communities.”
