This week controversial Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, a strident Democrat, declared a public health emergency in response to the thousands of illegal immigrants entering the city on buses from Arizona and Texas.
Bowser said the emergency “would allow us to have a coordinated response,” reported CNN. She plans for every bus from Arizona and Texas to be met by government personnel, and for “most people” to “move on” after visiting the nation’s capital.
She said the health emergency will help “make sure we have a human, efficient, welcome process that will allow people to move on to their final destination.”
Bowser has repeatedly struggled to deal with the influx of illegal immigrants in recent months. In late July, Bowser attempted to indefinitely call the National Guard in response to buses full of immigrants arriving in her city.

“We continue to be very focused on having the federal government do its part, and take the lead in addressing what we see as a growing humanitarian crisis with people who are seeking asylum coming across the country to get onto their final destinations,” Bowser said at the time, adding that they were “going to continue to pursue federal involvement.”
The National Guard denied her request, but Bowser has continued to stress that the illegal immigrants will “move on” to another “destination” and not remain in the capital.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began busing illegal immigrants from Texas and Arizona to Washington, D.C. in April of this year in a move that drew mixed response from conservatives and condemnation from the left.

Some conservatives believe the nation’s capital should experience the immigration crisis first hand, while others express doubts about spending money to redistribute the illegal immigration problem to other states rather than ending it by curtailing illegal immigration.
Liberals, meanwhile, have accused Abbott and conservatives of causing a “humanitarian crisis” by moving around 8,000 illegal immigrants from Texas to Washington, D.C.
In Washington, D.C., the regular arrivals of immigrants have led a number of left wing activists to plan around bus stops.
When the policy began in April, Border Hawk News reporter Wid Lyman encountered the activists shepherding illegal immigrants off buses and into Union Station.
