In a bold and provocative speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, Argentine President Javier Milei took aim at the left-wing Davos elites, accusing them of abandoning the values of the West.

Milei, who has been in office for just a few weeks, flew to Switzerland on a commercial plane, emphasizing his commitment to austerity and his opposition to the socialist agenda he claims is pervasive among the Davos crowd.

In his speech, Milei praised free market economics and urged leaders not to be intimidated by the political class or by parasites who live off the state. He also criticized the “radical feminist agenda” and abortion, and called for the elimination of price controls on some goods.

Milei’s speech drew praise from right-wing figures on social media platform X, including its owner Elon Musk, who wrote “true” in response to a video of the speech.

After his speech, Milei met with International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva and British Foreign Minister David Cameron. The two leaders discussed the Falkland Islands, the British-held territory which Buenos Aires and London went to war over in 1982.

Milei’s visit to Davos marks his first overseas tour since taking office last month. The self-proclaimed “anarcho capitalist” is hoping to win backing for his economic ideas, which include shutting down the central bank and adopting the dollar.

The trip to Davos is a test for the political newcomer, who is facing a major economic crisis at home. Milei’s trip to the Swiss resort town is also a chance for him to make his mark on the international stage and to establish himself as a major player in the global conservative movement.
