A grand jury in New Mexico has indicted actor Alec Baldwin on two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust.” The charges come after months of speculation and legal wrangling, with the case initially being dropped last year due to evidence concerns.
Special prosecutors presented the case to the grand jury this week, following new analysis of the gun that was used in the incident. The Colt .45 was found to be functioning properly, contrary to earlier claims that it was not working correctly. This new evidence has led to the re-indictment of Baldwin, who had previously faced charges in 2021 that were later dropped.
Two witnesses, both crew members present at the time of the shooting, were seen at the courthouse during the proceedings. One of them was present when the fatal shot was fired, while the other had walked off the set the day before due to safety concerns.

If convicted, Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison. His legal team, consisting of Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, has not yet responded to requests for comment on the indictment. The case has garnered significant attention from the public and the media, as it raises questions about safety protocols and the responsibilities of actors and producers on film sets.
In the wake of the tragedy, the entertainment industry has been forced to re-examine its safety standards and practices. The incident has also sparked a broader conversation about the use of firearms in film and television productions. Many have called for stricter regulations and more stringent safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
As the case moves forward, the public will be watching closely to see how the legal proceedings unfold and whether justice will be served for the family of Halyna Hutchins.
