TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis has staunchly defended his network’s decision to interview former President Donald Trump, amidst a flurry of criticism from left-leaning figures and groups. This comes after journalist Enrique Acevedo conducted a comprehensive interview with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, which has been met with disapproval by some liberals who were displeased that the Spanish-language network provided a platform for the former president.

In an internal memo sent out to all U.S. employees on Tuesday evening, Davis addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the Trump interview. He emphasized Univision’s responsibility “to provide our audience the information to make decisions based on accurate coverage of the election process” and rejected any attempts to destabilize this vision, including those from partisans within the press or political machinery.

Davis highlighted the crucial role the Hispanic vote will play in the 2024 election outcome. He described Univision’s mission as one that seeks to “inform and empower” Spanish-speaking audiences through engagement with the entire Hispanic community.

In a departure from the strategies adopted by other major networks, Univision has chosen a non-partisan and objective approach. Davis stated, “We serve our audience by being welcoming of competing issues, ideas, candidates, and parties.” He further added that it was the network’s duty to present “the full landscape of ideas,” which included interviewing current frontrunners, sitting Presidents, and other candidates.

This interview marked the network’s first with a current or former Republican president in 22 years, while it has conducted many interviews with Democratic presidents during the same period. Davis also expressed the network’s willingness to interview President Biden on reciprocal terms.

Davis ended the memo by reiterating Univision’s commitment to giving Democrats, Republicans, and independents an equal voice in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.

This incident has once again spotlighted the ongoing debate about media objectivity and the role of news organizations in providing balanced coverage. It serves as a reminder that news outlets have a responsibility to present a diverse range of perspectives, regardless of political leanings.
