Former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger recently appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to discuss the deeply personal story of how he was disowned by members of his family for his transformation into a left-wing, anti-Trump activist. Kinzinger opened up about the emotional toll of his family’s rejection, describing their view of him as “a disappointment… to us and to God.”

During the interview, Kinzinger recounted the challenges he faced after crying in public and repeatedly attacking President Donald Trump and aligning himself with left-leaning ideologies. He revealed that his family sent him a certified letter disowning him, expressing their belief that his political shift represented a betrayal of their shared values.

In a CNN interview this week, Kinzinger revealed “So, I had family that sent a certified letter disowning me. They said I’ve lost the trust of great men like Sean Hannity, which is funny, but they believe that. They said I was a member of the devil’s army.”

Kinzinger’s decision to become an outspoken critic of Trump and embrace progressive policies has strained his relationships with his family members, who accused him of abandoning their conservative principles. The disownment serves as a painful reminder of the deep divisions within the Republican Party and the broader conservative movement.

While some may view Kinzinger’s disownment as a consequence of his political choices, others argue that it reflects the increasingly polarized nature of American politics. Kinzinger’s story highlights the challenges faced by individuals who deviate from the expected ideological alignment within their families, particularly in the context of a deeply divided political landscape.

Kinzinger was famously mocked by Tucker Carlson in a monologue last year.

“Adam Kinzinger will live forever in our hearts as an example of what a man can be when he stops trying to be a man and unleashes the emotionally fragile, divorced, single mom within. ‘Have another glass of chardonnay. Listen to me cry.’ Yes, Ms. Kinzinger, we will,” Carlson said.
