California Governor Gavin Newsom has selected Laphonza Butler, president of EMILY’s List, to fill the Senate seat left vacant following the passing of Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein. Newsom’s choice marks a significant moment in U.S. history, with Butler becoming the third Black woman ever to serve in the U.S. Senate.
“If Senator Feinstein decides to seek re-election, she has my whole-hearted support,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had previously stated. “If she decides not to run, I will be supporting House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, who knows well the nexus between a strong Democracy and a strong economy.”
However, Pelosi celebrated the appointment on Monday.
Laphonza Butler is a prominent Democratic strategist and the current leader of EMILY’s List, an organization dedicated to electing Democratic women to office. She brings a wealth of experience to the role, including her time as a labor leader.
Feinstein, who had been a longstanding and influential figure in the Senate, left a significant void in California politics with her passing. Newsom’s decision to choose Butler to fill this seat signifies a potential snub to Schiff.
The announcement has not been without controversy, however. Reports have emerged suggesting that Butler may have attempted to erase online evidence of living in Maryland. These reports, if substantiated, could potentially raise questions about Butler’s eligibility and commitment to the Californian constituents she will represent.
Despite these allegations, many have applauded Newsom’s decision to appoint Butler. As a seasoned political operative and advocate for women’s representation in politics, Butler is poised to bring a fresh perspective to the Senate.
As California prepares for this transition, the nation watches closely. With Butler’s appointment, the landscape of the Senate changes, reflecting an ever-diversifying America and marking another step towards left-wing representation of women and people of color in the highest levels of government.
