Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis promised to make a public decision about running for president in 2024 “relatively soon” and acknowledged that the time to make his intentions known is drawing near.
DeSantis was asked about his intentions for 2024 by a reporter today and delivered a winding response that ultimately revealed he intends to make his plans known because “you’ve either got to put up or shut up” on the decision.
“I started to get asked about this years ago but it’s like – look, I was in my first term as governor, we were doing good things,” DeSantis began, referring to his potential candidacy for president “A lot of the stuff I was doing that I think put me on the map was because I was getting criticized for it, especially during Covid, it turned out Florida handled it right, and then many other things there.”
“But I was like, look, at the end of the day, as a leader, you get things done – very important – but you also gotta show, take that case to the voters, and you gotta be able to get some support down on the election front,” said the popular Republican.

“So I felt very confident going into November 2022 we were going to do very well, but you really had to put up or shut up on that, and so we did that, and I think that was something that was really significant so then people have been asking a lot after that.”
Hinting that his rumored decision to run for president in 2024 may not be set in stone, DeSantis acknowledged the work he’s doing in Florida, before then suggesting his decision will come soon.
“But I also understood that we had this opportunity here to be able to really, really do a lot of great stuff, and I’ve always said that we’re going to see this through and that’s what we’re going to do.”
“What happens in the future, look, people, we will get on that relatively soon. You’ve either got to put up or shut up on that as well, so we’ll see.”
DeSantis is widely expected to announce a presidential run as early as this month, especially after a bill passed the Florida legislature that specifically allows him to run for president without resigning as Florida’s governor. The bill is expected to become law.
