Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has said he has given “serious consideration” to a 2024 presidential run, and that he doesn’t believe 45th President Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee.

Speaking to Neil Cavuto on Fox News, Hogan said that while a “chunk of people” still really like President Trump and his policies, he isn’t the “strongest nominee” to win the 2024 presidential election.

“We’ve got to figure out a candidate that can appeal to a broader audience of people and can win over swing voters, otherwise we don’t get to govern,” Hogan argued, claiming that the Republicans “keep losing elections.”

Hogan initially refused to answer whether he would support President Trump if he was the Republican nominee, and simply said that he wasn’t going to be the nominee. Later clarifying his comments on Twitter, he said he “fully expects” to support to nominee, which a member of his team confirmed to The Hill was contingent on it not being Trump.

When asked by Cavuto if he thought about running himself, Hogan said he is giving the question “very serious consideration,” and cited his supposed economic success in Maryland.

Greg Price, former Daily Caller journalist, noted that in 2024, Hogan could be a “serious threat” to take a Senate seat away from the Democrats in Maryland, and act as another “Susan Collins,” as a moderate Republican. “But he’s a dumb egghead who would rather embarrass himself in a run for president,” Price quipped.

Hogan told Cavuto that regardless of the outcome, the candidate selection was not going to be a “coronation” for Trump. “I think it’s good to have a debate and more voices talking about how we can get the party back to being successful again, and how we can turn the country around,” Hogan added.

The former Maryland Governor suggested that governors have an advantage when it comes to running for president. “We’ve had some great former governors that became president and did a great job. It really is a training ground. You’re an executive, you’re making important decisions… I think governors are a good place for us to look for leadership at the national level,” he said.

Nikki Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina, will announce her 2024 presidential run on February 15th in Charleston, according to reports. Haley tweeted on Wednesday that it will be a “Great Day in South Carolina.”
