New York’s $523,000 ‘Carbon Neutral’ Electric Garbage Trucks Can’t Handle Winter Weather

“We found that they could not plow the snow effectively – they basically conked out after four hours.”

New York’s plan to have its fleet of sanitation trucks become fully electrified by 2040 has been stalled by the fact that the electric vehicles cannot handle winter temperatures.

The city’s Department of Sanitation has previously aimed to switch all 6,000 vehicles in its fleet to electric power within the next few years.

New York differs from many other major cities in delegating its plowing duties to the Department of Sanitation, rather than dedicated snow plow trucks designed for that purpose.

However, the Gothamist reported this week that “The city Department of Sanitation’s goals to become carbon neutral are clashing with the limits of electric-powered vehicles.”

The sanitation department has ordered seven electric garbage trucks, custom-made by Mack and costing more than $523,000 each.

“We found that they could not plow the snow effectively – they basically conked out after four hours. We need them to go 12 hours,” Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the City Council. “Given the current state of the technology, I don’t see today a path forward to fully electrifying the rear loader portion of the fleet by 2040.”

She added, “We can’t really make significant progress in converting our rear loader fleet until the snow challenges are addressed.”

The electric trucks have had issues running for more than four hours before needing a charge.

Biden administration Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg contrasted the “pain” of most Americans driving gasoline-powered cars that are affected by high petroleum prices against the “benefit” for those who can afford expensive electric vehicles during House testimony in July.

“The more pain we are all experiencing from the high price of gas, the more benefit there is for those who can access electric vehicles,” Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg also broke into a fit of laughter, adding, “Of course – no, no, that’s what you heard me say. I know you want me to say it so bad but honestly sir, what we’re saying is we could have no pain at all by making EVs cheaper for everyone.”

It looks like New York is going to have to pray for Global warming so they don’t have to plow snow with their over half million dollar trucks. And how much is it going to cost to replace the batteries in a few years? GO WOKE AND GO BROKE!

As things stand now, EV’s ARE NOT a viable replacement for the good old fashioned Internal Combustion Engine which experts claim are dirtying up our atmosphere. Tests have been done, and the results of those tests have proven that EV’s are nowhere near as good for our atmosphere as the “experts” claim they are. Those very tests have proven that EV’s are BIGGER POLLUTERS of our atmosphere than are ICE’s. Due to the weight of the EV’s battery, tires wear out faster, and pollute our atmosphere with excess rubber particulate due to the increase in tire wear. Add to that the fact that some form of FOSSIL FUEL (usually COAL) MUST BE BURNED in order to power the generators that produce the electricity to charge/recharge EV batteries!! Put in SIMPLE TERMINOLOGY, EV’s ARE NOWHERE NEAR READY TO REPLACE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES!!!!

Another reason these trucks conked out at 4 hours is they have to use a lot of power to keep their own batteries warm. It results in a loss of anywhere for 19 to 30% of capacity. The same studies have been done on EV trucks for over the road freight hauling. In cold weather they get a max range of around 200 miles between charges.

You are exactly correct on all points. This is just another scam to put your money in others’ pockets, for no good reason! Even the manufacture of many of the components, and the acquisition of the materials for making them, are ecological disasters! The bottom line is that this is just intended to deprive most of us of liberty to move about freely & affordably! Itwill 3nable forcing us into the giant urban enclaves in which the globalists want the humans they deign to permit to live, for purposes of greater control over us.

E/V’s need to be tested and tested until they have engineered a battery that can out perform the internal combustion engine. Take back packs for instance, military back packs work and last. Now we have backpacks for school children, new mothers, travelers, campers and a number of other reason for backpacks. This type of making new products, along with the pollution control takes time and can’t be done just because governments want it done.

Did Buttgage really say “…what we’re saying is we could have no pain at all by making EVs cheaper for everyone.”? How is he going to do that other than by forcing ICE car owners to heavily subsidize EVs? We have been doing so for decades to no avail. Time to stop that wasteful policy.

Oh he said it, but then he’s just another low-info leftist, runnung on emotion not reason or logic! Even ICE vehicles’batteries are impacted by extreme cold! Drivers in very cold climes KNOW that, & that they have to be kept warm through the below zero nights, if you want them to run in the morning!

I will bet it took 10 hours to charge the trucks with a high spreed charger. That should take them about a month to clear the snow. Wait, tell the drivers to quit running the heater to keep warm. That might get them another one or two hours of run time. All this to have a legacy of making us a third world country and being the dumbest person on earth. Way to go Joey.

The price between a NEW off the showroom vehicle, powered by gasoline, is about twice as cheap as a EV. I could not believe the price difference! For just the battery alone, is way to high. If those batteries ever catch fire, DON’T call the Fire department, they can’t put out a magnesium fire, it makes its own O2. It can only burn out after the fuel is gone! No, they can have them!

Couldn’t happen to a nicer city. If the garbage trucks were on their usual diesel, this would have never happened. Unqualified woke Mayor Adams, owns it. One gets what they elected. They overlooked the fact, when it’s really cold outside, it will kill the batteries. One should look forward to the electric police cars and ambulances.
