Florida Democrat State Rep. Anna Eskamani was fact-checked by Twitter after falsely claiming that a conservative account was “trolling” her with “disinformation memes.”

The “meme” in question featured a September 2022 tweet in which Eskamani claimed that the prevalence of “election deniers” running for office in the November midterms this year is “dangerous.”

“More Than 1 In 2 Americans Will Have An Election Denier On The Ballot This Fall,” Eskamani claimed. “This isn’t funny — it’s dangerous.”

The tweet was featured on the Defiant L’s Twitter account, which revealed that in 2018, the same Florida Democrat baselessly claimed that the 2016 Presidential Election was “rigged.”

“‘Rigged Witch Hunt’… the only thing rigged in this was the 2016 presidential election,” Eskamani wrote.

In response to the conservative account’s tweet highlighting her own past election denial, Eskamani accused Defiant L’s of “trolling” her with “disinformation memes.”

“I must be doing something right when conservative accounts start trolling with disinformation memes. Appreciate y’all for at least using a nice picture of me,” Eskamani wrote.

The Florida Democrat’s response tweet was ultimately flagged by Twitter’s “Birdwatch” feature, which reminded users that despite her “disinformation” allegations, she did in fact publish both tweets.

“Both tweets contained in the image were, in fact, tweeted by Rep. Eskamani,” Twitter wrote, linking to both of Eskamani tweets under the clarifying statement.

After falsely accusing Defiant L’s of spreading “disinformation” and claiming that she “must be doing something right” to prompt the account into posting about her, one Twitter user commented “Doing something right? Last time I heard that rhetoric I was told it’s a threat to our democracy.”

Rep. Eskamani then claimed that her 2018 tweet was actually in reference to her belief that the Democratic National Committee was “influencing” the 2016 Presidential Primary.

“…are you referring to people storming the Capitol on 1/6 because I agree that is a threat to our democracy,” Eskamani retorted.

“A random tweet from 2018 where I loosely commented on DNC influencing the 2016 Presidential Primary is not. I’ve always referred to President Trump as President, too,” she claimed.

Jeremy Redfern, Deputy Press Secretary for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, then hopped in the conversation to add “You were literally commenting on an article about the president. It had nothing to do with the primary.”

Redfern’s response featured a larger screenshot of Eskamani’s August 1, 2018 tweet that was omitted from the Defiant L’s post, which revealed that Eskamani included a link to a New York Times story titled Trump Tells Sessions to ‘Stop This Rigged Witch Hunt Right Now,’ which was published on the very same day.

In addition to Eskamani, Twitter has dished out several fact checks on tweets published by the Biden administration following the platform’s takeover by African-American billionaire Elon Musk, Valiant News reported.
