Pope Francis is traveling to Maskwacis, Canada to apologize to the country’s indigenous population over the “evil committed by so many Christians” who did not respect their pagan “spiritual values” and “culture.”

“I humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous Peoples,” Francis said.

As part of his “penitential pilgrimage,” the leader of the Catholic Church apologized for the alleged abuse that Christian missionaries’ partook in at residential schools, which were apparently designed to “Christianize” indigenous children in Canada by relocating them and prohibiting them from speaking their native languages in the 1880s throughout the 20th Century.

The Canadian government’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission called what happened at the schools “cultural genocide”.

In April, Francis previously expressed his “sorrow and shame for the role that a number of Catholics, particularly those with educational responsibilities, have had in all these things that wounded you, in the abuses you suffered and in the lack of respect shown for your identity, your culture and even your spiritual values.”

In one video, the 85-year-old pontiff is seen donning a indigenous headdress.

“I am here because the first step of this penitential pilgrimage among you is that of again asking forgiveness to tell you once with all my heart that I am deeply sorry,” Francis said.

Francis then decried Christians who had a “colonizing mentality” over the native populations, who supported “forced assimilation.”

“I ask for pardon for the ways in which, regrettably, many Christians supported the colonizing mentality of the powers that oppressed the indigenous peoples. I am sorry,” he continued.

“I apologize in particular for the ways in which many members of the Church and of religious communities cooperated, not least through their indifference, in projects of cultural destruction and forced assimilation promoted by the governments of that time, which culminated in the system of residential schools,” Francis said.
