Elizabeth Frawley Bagley, the Biden administration’s nominee to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Brazil, is currently under fire for previously claiming the “Jewish lobby” holds great influence over the Democratic Party with its “major money,” referring to it as the “Jewish factor.”

Bagley is set to have her nomination advanced to the full Senate by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday.

Politicians on both sides of the political aisle in Washington, D.C. are upset with her remarks about Jewish influence in American finance and politics, and are claiming that her statements were “anti-Semitic” and should disqualify her from the position.

The remarks from Bagley’s 1998 interview, conducted by “a historian at the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training for an oral history project,” recently resurfaced after being obtained and reported on by the Washington Free Beacon. Bagley was serving as the U.S. ambassador to Portugal at the time.

During the discussion, she was asked about “Israeli influence” on the Clinton administration and reportedly denounced “the influence of the Jewish lobby because there is major money involved,” adding that “the Democrats always tend to go with the Jewish constituency on Israel and say stupid things, like moving the capital to Jerusalem always comes up.”

According to Bagley in 1998, “the Jewish factor” is to blame for Democrat politicians supporting Israel. “It’s money,” she said.

“There is always the influence of the Jewish lobby because there is major money involved,” Bagley said. “But, I don’t remember any major issues coming out on that, besides the usual ‘make Jerusalem the capital of Israel,’ which is always an issue in the campaign.”

Democrats “always tend to go with the Jewish constituency on Israel and say stupid things, like moving the capital to Jerusalem always comes up. Things that we shouldn’t even touch,” she said.

“Jewish Democrats,” she continued, “were going to give their money to Clinton anyway and Jews are mostly Democrats on social issues.” She added,  the “Jewish factor, it’s money.”

When questioned about the the allegedly anti-Semitic remarks during a May 18 confirmation hearing with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bagley claimed her statements were part of a “free-flowing discussion.”

“The language you used in regard to the Jewish community, Israel’s influence on our election, and Jewish money have me concerned,” Senator Ben Cardin (D-M)) said. “The choice of words was fit into the traditional tropes of anti-Semitism.”

“I regret that you would think that it was a problem,” Bagley replied. “I certainly didn’t mean anything by it. It was a poor choice of words, but it was something that the interviewer had asked me, prompted by something about politics.”

Bagley ultimately apologized and said that she is “very sorry about that choice of words.”

Well she isn’t wrong but she ought to mention that both parties are beholden to the Jewish lobby.
