Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene delivered a somber speech to her social media audience in which she responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request for the United States to involve itself further in defense of Ukraine, and lambasted the Biden White House’s current stance against Russia as an invitation for a new world war.
“We are told that we have an urgent moral responsibility to send money and munitions to a country 6,000 miles away,” Greene began. “A country that just coincidentally Joe Biden has business interests in,” she added.
On the same topic, Greene later added that the request “concerns a country in which Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Mitt Romney have direct financial interests,” and to defend “a government which only exists because the Obama state department helped to overthrow the previous regime.”
Greene referred to the Obama administration’s support for the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution that saw Ukraine’s pro-Russian government replaced with a pro-NATO government.
The official story regarding Greene’s claim that multiple prominent politicians have ties to Ukraine is murky.
Joe Biden’s troubled son Hunter was involved with Burisma, an energy firm that did business in Ukraine. Nancy Pelosi’s son, Paul Pelosi Jr., was reportedly involved in another Ukrainian energy firm. Both of Mitt Romney’s sons have been accused of having business ties to Ukraine, though Reuters denied any evidence in a fact check.
In fact, the Ukrainian business ties of all the men have been disputed by various fact checkers at various times, though the New York Times revelation that Hunter Biden’s laptop was authentic may spark additional review.
“This won’t be like any entanglement America has ever entered into before”
– Marjorie Taylor Greene on the prospect of war with Russia
Greene then turned to the impact of war on human life.
“When we invaded Iraq on the pretext of looking for weapons of mass destruction, over 4,500 civilians were killed in just the first few days,” Greene said.
She said that, because of the invasion, the United States “became embroiled in nearly 20 years of pointless war” and called for “a more level headed approach to foreign engagements” from “America’s elites” and said it is “time we loosened the military industrial complex’s stranglehold on our politicians and our policy makers.”
Greene acknowledged that “There is no doubt Putin’s actions in Ukraine are despicable and evil.” She explained, “We regret any human suffering and we mourn any loss of human life, but we cannot and we must not allow our compassion to blind us to reason and common sense.”
The congresswoman then told her audience that a potential war with Russia will be alien compared to the United States’ past military victories, or even more recent military stalemates in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
“This won’t be like any entanglement America has ever entered into before,” warned Greene. “A potential war with Russia is not comparable to Iraq or Afghanistan.”
“This is an 8 year long smoldering conflict in which peace agreements have been routinely ignored by both sides.”
It is true that conflict in Ukraine began after the Euromaidan Revolution, when ethnic Russians in the Donbass region objected to the newly installed pro-NATO government.
They began protesting in large numbers, prompting the new government to respond violently. Ultimately, Russia began providing weapons to the protesters, who eventually declared themselves the independent Republic of Luhansk and Republic of Donetsk.
Both republics are virtually unrecognized on the world stage, except by Russia, which cited concerns of Ukrainian state violence against the ethnic Russians in the Donbass region as its pretext for a “special military operation.” Ukraine said the concerns were meritless, and the invasion unprovoked.
“The ugly truth is that America is in no shape to throw herself into another foreign conflict,” Greene asserted. “Under Joe Biden, America’s economy is weak and dependent on foreign nations for goods and even for energy.” She warned that “The more we involve ourselves in this foreign mess, the more we force our enemies and frenemies together, playing right into China’s hands.”
“If the petrodollar is eliminated as a result of Biden’s incompetence, life as we know it in America will be over forever”
– Greene on Saudi Arabia reportedly selling oil for Chinese yuan
Greene then noted that the United States’ prestige on the world stage appears to be at risk, and cited the reports Saudi Arabia is considering selling oil to China in exchange for Chinese yuan as opposed to the American dollar.
“It is impossible to overstate the consequences to America if the dollar loses its position as the preeminent international media of exchange,” Greene said, before warning that “worldwide famines” could follow the Western sanctions against Russia’s exports of “fertilizer, grains, and energy.”
“If the petrodollar is eliminated as a result of Biden’s incompetence, life as we know it in America will be over forever,” warned Greene.
“The dollar will collapse. We will no longer control the undisputed world currency,” she explained. “Our economy will surely collapse thereafter under the massive debt administration after administration have so irresponsibly created.”
It is true that Saudi Arabia is reportedly in high level talks with China to begin selling the country oil in Chinese yuan. The Saudi Arabian monarchy is reportedly upset with the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal, and with its decision to pursue a nuclear deal with Iran.
Greene then noted that Zelensky’s request for a U.S.-led “no-fly zone” over Ukraine would necessitate Americans killing Russians, almost certainly leading to war between two nuclear powers.
“When President Zelensky asked America to enforce a no fly zone above Ukraine, we should be clear and honest about what that means,” declared Greene.
“It means Vladimir Putin backed into a corner, his finger hovering over the nuclear button. It means World War Three.”
– Greene on the consequences of a U.S.-led no-fly zone
“He is asking America to shoot down Russian planes. It means war,” she said. “It means more dead Americans and more billions of dollars spent on another foreign entanglement that the American people do not want and which we cannot afford.”
“It means Vladimir Putin backed into a corner, his finger hovering over the nuclear button,” warned Greene. “It means World War Three.”
Greene’s critics at The Washington Post opinion section have dismissed her warnings as Russian propaganda and suggested her speech is evidence of her diminishing influence.
Greene’s statement was originally streamed live to Facebook, where it has amassed more than 20,000 views.
