The first major political candidate to call off their political campaign for the the 2024 Presidential race is Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who announced Tuesday that he is suspending his campaign.
Suarez’s long-shot bid for the White House has been marked by challenges from the start. Politico noted that despite an energetic campaign, Suarez struggled to gain momentum and make a significant impact on the crowded GOP field.
A pivotal factor contributing to Suarez’s decision appears to be his failure to qualify for the first Republican presidential debate. The South Florida Republican leader cited this setback as a catalyst for re-evaluating his campaign strategy and ultimately deciding to suspend his campaign.
WPTV further emphasized the uphill battle Suarez faced in his attempt to become the next president of the United States. Despite his local popularity as Miami’s mayor, Suarez found it challenging to expand his appeal on a national level.
Earlier this year, Suarez was floated as a potential vice presidential pick by Trump’s former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, according to KCRA. However, his decision to suspend his campaign so early may put an end to such speculation. Alternatively, his early decision to pull out may provoke praise from the former president.
Suarez made the announcement about suspending his campaign on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “While I have decided to suspend my campaign for President, my commitment to making this a better nation for every American remains.”
“The current Administration is failing our country. Inflation remains high, elevated interest rates are punishing young Americans, the southern border is wide open, crime is rising, and our enemies and adversaries are growing bolder and stronger,” wrote Suarez. “We deserve better.”

Following Suarez’s withdrawal, the race for the Republican nomination continues with several candidates vying for the top spot. Suarez’s exit will likely trigger a reshuffling of support among the remaining contenders, potentially altering the dynamics of the race.
A recent poll of Republican voters found Trump dominating with 50 percent of support. Behind him remains Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, though his position has shrunk to just 12 percent. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy is rising, however, with 9% of the vote.
