The government of Kiev, Ukraine has formally denied responsibility for the car bomb that claimed the life of a Russian philosopher sometimes referred to as “Putin’s Rasputin” on Saturday.

Alexander Dugin’s daughter, Darya Dugina, was seemingly assassinated by a car bomb apparently meant for her father on Saturday. Alexander Dugin and his daughter had attended a cultural festival on the outskirts of Moscow, and he had reportedly traveled to the event and planned to travel home with Dugina, though decided against it at the last minute.

Dugin was seen staring at the flames in disbelief after the vehicle his exploded with his daughter inside.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected blame after Russian officials claimed Ukrainian “terrorists” were behind the attack, reported the New York Post.

One of Zelensky’s advisors, Mykhailo Podolyak, said that the country “has nothing to do with the explosion” and called Russia a “criminal state” while stressing Ukraine is not a “terrorist state.”

Dugin is a Russian philosopher with Russian nationalist views, and though he does not hold an official position in the Russian government, he is believed to be one of the top advisors to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sometimes likened to Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, Dugin has also been called “Putin’s brain,” as it is believed Putin shares the philosopher’s ardent nationalist views, among them the belief that Ukraine is historically part of Russia.

Dugin is a strong critic of U.S.-led Western liberalism, and considers himself a conservative within the context of his nation.

“We, conservatives, want a strong, solid state, want order and healthy family, positive values, the reinforcing of the importance of religion and the Church in society,” said Dugin in 2012. He added, “We want patriotic radio, TV, patriotic experts, patriotic clubs. We want the media that expresses national interests”.

More recently, Dugin described the United States as “a zombie society” with citizens simultaneously obsessed with Russia while being unable to locate the country on a map.

Russia has opened a probe into the bombing, and The Russian Investigative Committee said that early data indicates a bomb had been planted in the vehicle driven by Dugina while she attended a cultural festival.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Russia launched what it calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24 following a years long standoff over disputed territories in eastern Ukraine. Moscow claims it launched the operation to protect ethnic Russians in the Donbass from Ukrainian state violence, while Kiev and its allies claim the attack was unprovoked.
