Vice President Kamala Harris spent more than a half hour speaking to the audience at Essence Fest, an annual music festival held in New Orleans, while sitting in front of a screen that featured a major typo: “Lousiana” instead of “Louisiana.”
Harris’s speech at the event, held from June 30 to July 3, was featured yesterday and has around 5,000 views on YouTube.
The signage behind Harris reads, “Vice President Kamala Harris” and “New Orleans, Lousiana” and the typo remains visible for her entire appearance. Harris, her interviewer, and the crowd appear not to notice – or at least address – the typo.
While it’s unclear if Harris’s team made the screen or if the organizers of the event made it, the display closely resembles that of other White House events. It’s worth noting that the word seems to be displayed on a screen, not printed on the wall, and thus could have likely been corrected with a computer.

It’s also worth noting that the typo may represent an attempt to mirror the way some southerners pronounce Louisiana as “Loose-ee-ann-a,” rather than “Loo-ee-zee-ann-a”.

In the interview itself, Harris delivers a stuttering recounting of when she learned the “they declared the race” in her favor in 2020 while sitting in front of the screen emblazoned with the typo. She also referred to Joe Biden as the “vice president” and “vice president-elect.”
“You’ll remember, the election happened, but it took awhile for it to be delcared.” Harris said. “My husband and I were staying in Delaware so we could be near the vice president-elect, the president-elect at the time.”
“I went up to the house and went upstairs to go take a shower,” said Harris, “I got a text, and it said they declared the race.”
Joe Biden has repeatedly referred to Harris as the sitting president in flubs that have become characteristic of his administration.
