Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is reaching out to registered Democrat voters and urging them to switch their party affiliation so they can vote for in her contentious upcoming primary, the New York Times reported this week.
In addition to her website containing detailed instructions for Democrats on how to switch parties to vote for her, Cheney is now mailing those instructions to registered Democrat voters across the state of Wyoming.
“Joseph Barbuto, the chairman of the Wyoming Democratic Party, was among those who received Ms. Cheney’s instructions,” the Times reported. “Mr. Barbuto said that over the last week, his social media feeds have been flooded with Democrats — and only Democrats — posting about receiving mailers from the Cheney campaign.”
Barbuto noted, “I haven’t had any Republicans share online or tell me that they received it.”
The Times noted that Barbuto was skeptical of Cheney’s ability to sway enough Democratic voters to lead her to victory in the GOP primary.
“Even if every Democrat in the state switched over,” he said, “I don’t think it’d be enough to help her.”
Cheney, whose congressional career has been narrowly focused on attacking former Republican President Donald Trump, faces a challenge from Trump-endorsed candidate Harriet Hageman in her upcoming primary battle.
Trump has filled arenas in Wyoming during rallies in which he rails against Cheney, who currently suffers from plummeting approval ratings.
“Liz Cheney told The New York Times that she wouldn’t be encouraging Democrats to raid the Republican primary, but I guess the drive to hold onto power is just too strong for her to keep her word,” Hageman’s campaign manager Carly Miller told the newspaper. “What Cheney doesn’t understand is that Democrats will drop her like a bad habit after she’s no longer useful to them on the Jan. 6 committee.”
