In a recent segment on CNN, anti-Trump neoconservative commentator Jonah Goldberg criticized New York Attorney General Letitia James’s case against former President Donald Trump as a “mistake” and a “very political” indictment that should have never been brought.
Goldberg, a former Fox News contributor and editor at the anti-Trump publication National Review, stated that the case against Trump was driven by political motivations rather than a genuine pursuit of justice. He pointed to James’s campaign promise to “get Donald Trump” as evidence of her political agenda.
“So let me just sort of set the broad parameters,” Goldberg said. “I think this whole trial, prosecution was a mistake. I think it’s very political. Someone campaigned on an election to do this. It’s an elected judge. It was part of sort of the party machinery.”
“The psychology of this is really brutal for him in the sense that he takes great pride in his business and his business empire,” Goldberg added. “On the flip side, the politics of it — being on trial — is really good for him. He doesn’t have to be there. He’s there on purpose. And it’s an excuse not to be out on the campaign trail. It’s an excuse not to do debates and all that kind of stuff, and it has been working for him.”
The case against Trump, which was brought by James in 2024, centers on allegations of financial fraud and tax evasion. Trump has denied the charges and has accused James of being a “racist” and a “political hack.”
Goldberg’s comments have sparked a debate among legal experts and political analysts, with some agreeing with his assessment and others arguing that the case is based on legitimate legal grounds.
The case is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how it will ultimately be resolved. However, Goldberg’s comments have added a new layer of complexity to an already contentious issue.
