Sen. Rand Paul appeared on Fox News to discuss the state of political violence in the United States following the attack on Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin in New York last week.

Paul, who was himself attacked and severely injured by a neighbor in an event that is believed to have been motivated by politics, then again on the streets of Washington, D.C. by members of an Antifa mob of rioters, said that there is a “day of reckoning” ahead for those that employ or condone political violence.

“The left wing is egging this on, and if we want it to end we’ve got to lock people up,” said the Republican. “The violent people need to be put away for as long as we can put them away.”

“Ultimately there’s going to come a day of reckoning, where the people who live in New York City – crime disproportionately affects those in poorer neighborhoods and those who are minorities – one day they’re going to rise up and say ‘We’ve had enough,'” said Paul.

“The Democrats are not protecting our children, kids are dying at the bus stop, kids are dying on the subway, the Democrats don’t care about your kids and it continues to happen decade after decade.”

“There’s going to be a day that people are going to wake up and say, ‘We’ve had enough,'” Paul said. “We’re going to vote for law and order, and Lee Zeldin is the law and order candidate.”

Paul also compared the soft treatment given to journalists in Kentucky who were convicted of assaulting political figures – one Paul says was released from prison after only two days despite having attempted a political assassination – to the treatment of January 6 detainees, some of whom have been detained for over 18 months without a trial.
