World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus now privately believes that COVID-19 originated in a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan, China, from which it ultimately spread to every inhabited continent and killed millions.
Ghebreyesus apparently made the claims privately to “a senior European politician,” and the line eventually made it to a government source for The Daily Mail. Ghebreyesus apparently confided “that the most likely explanation was a catastrophic accident at a laboratory in Wuhan, where infections first spread during late 2019.”
However, the top WHO doctor publicly maintains that he does not have a personal opinion about how the disease originated, saying publicly that “We do not yet have the answers as to where it came from or how it entered the human population.” Still, he stressed that knowing the origins of the virus is necessary.
‘All hypotheses must remain on the table until we have evidence that enables us to rule certain hypotheses in or out,” said Ghebreyesus. “This makes it all the more urgent that this scientific work be kept separate from politics. The way to prevent politicization is for countries to share data and samples with transparency and without interference from any government.”
“The only way this scientific work can progress successfully is with full collaboration from all countries, including China, where the first cases of SARS-CoV-2 were reported.’
The WHO was criticized in the West for its deferential attitude toward China in the opening months of the pandemic, with 45th President Donald Trump pulling the United States out of the international health body early in the pandemic. Biden reversed that move soon after entering office.
American media first reported on what has become known as the “lab leak theory” in early 2020, with Newsweek and other publications taking notice of the possibility. Fact checkers throughout social media claimed it was a conspiracy theory.
More recently, China has accused the United States of creating COVID-19 in a laboratory and denied rumors that it was created in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
