Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene can stand for re-election, after a leftist attempt to get her removed from the ballot for allegedly supporting an “insurrection” was rejected by a judge on Friday.
Representative Greene, one of the most stalwart supporters of the America First agenda in Congress, was targeted by leftist activists, hoping to stop her re-election by claiming that she had incited the protests on Capitol Hill on January 6 last year, which they claimed amounted to an “insurrection.”
According to the petitioners, Greene violated the 14th Amendment, which states that you cannot serve in Congress if you have previously taken a Congressional oath and then “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the Constitution. The petition argued that she “voluntarily aided and engaged in an insurrection to obstruct the peaceful transfer of presidential power.”
During a hearing last month, James Bopp, a lawyer for Representative Greene, attacked the petitioners, and claimed that they wanted to “deny the right to vote to the thousands of people living in the 14th District of Georgia” by removing her from the ballot, and added that she was a “victim” of the Capitol protests.
Ultimately, Judge Charles Beaudrot concluded on Friday that the petitioners failed to prove their argument. His decision follows that of Judge Richard Myers II in March, who blocked a similar re-election challenge against Greene’s fellow representative, Madison Cawthorn, who was also accused of supporting the so-called insurrection.
In a statement following the news, Representative Greene blamed a “Soros-style dark money group” for launching the attack on “free speech, on our elections” and the voters themselves. “Democrats know they can’t beat me at the ballot box, so left-wing Communist activists tried to RIP my name off the ballot,” she added, “and they failed”:
“This assault on our Constitution confirmed what we already knew: Democrats hate our system of free and fair elections. Not only do the Communists in power want to control speech through Biden’s ministry of truth, they also want to control who you can vote for by perverting our legal system. Democrats stole the 2020 presidential election by abusing and breaking our laws. Thankfully this attempt to rig another election was stopped in its tracks.”
She applauded Judge Beaudrot and said that she looked forward to “winning big” in her primary on May 24.
However, Greene is not out of the woods yet. It is ultimately up to Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who had been criticised by allies of President Trump for not fighting hard enough for election integrity following the 2020 election, to decide whether she is to be removed or not.
