“Several undetonated devices” were found by police after a shooting left at least five people shot, with 13 others sustaining injuries in a Brooklyn subway station on Tuesday morning in New York City, authorities say.
According to an unnamed law enforcement official, police are searching for a man wearing an orange construction vest and a gas mask.
Multiple outlets have reported on the attacks, but details are scarce as an investigation is underway.
Another law enforcement source briefed on the situation said preliminary information suggested a suspect was dressed in construction attire, according to the Associated Press. Sources said a masked man threw a device in the air and began shooting, striking several commuters. Graphic photos posted to Twitter showed injured commuters covered in blood.
“Either shots or a bomb went off at 36th Street. Scariest moment of my life, man” tweeted witness Roddy Brooke.
A male train passenger put on a gas mask, deployed a gas canister and then opened fire, shooting 10 commuters as a Manhattan-bound subway train headed into a station in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday morning, authorities said. Five of the 10 people shot are in critical but stable condition and six others were injured in the attack during the morning rush, FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanaugh said.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a statement said “we’re praying for all New Yorkers who were injured or effected by today’s attack.”
“So far, we know that we have a multiple number of injuries, including victims of gunshot wounds,” he said.

Adams added that “as of now, we have not found any live explosive devices, but the suspect in today’s attack detonated smoke bombs to cause havoc.”
“We will not allow New Yorkers to be terrorized, even by a single individual. NYPD is searching for the suspect at large and we will find him, but we ask the public to come forth with any information that will help us in this investigation,” Adams said.
