Moscow is on the verge of breaking off formal relations with the United States following explosive remarks Joe Biden made about his Russian counterpart last week.
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the U.S. Ambassador to Russia that relations between the two counties are at “the verge of breaking” due to Biden’s comments calling Vladimir Putin a “war criminal.”
Apparently, the U.S. Ambassador to Russia was “summoned” to the Foreign Ministry.
Then, according to the English translation of Russia’s statement on the matter, he “was demarched and handed a note of protest in connection with the recent unacceptable statements made by the head of the White House, Joe Biden, to the President of Russia.”
“It is emphasized that such statements by the American President, unworthy of a statesman of such a high rank, put Russian-American relations on the verge of breaking,” the Foreign Ministry stated. The U.S. Ambassador was reportedly “warned” that “hostile actions taken against Russia would receive a decisive and firm rebuff.”
Biden’s comments were cited by the Kremlin last week as evidence of his “fatigue and sometimes forgetfulness,” as reported by Valiant News.
“We hear and see statements that are actually personal insults to President Putin,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Friday according to a report from Reuters.
“Given such irritability from Mr. Biden, his fatigue and sometimes forgetfulness…fatigue that leads to aggressive statements, we will not make harsh assessments, so as to not cause more aggression,” Peskov noted.
The spokesman added, “We consider unacceptable and unforgivable such rhetoric of the head of state, whose bombs killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world.”
Russia invaded Ukraine last month after a years long standoff over the disputed Donbass region. Russia claims it launched a “special military operation” to protect ethnic Russians from Ukrainian state violence, while Ukraine and the international community claim Russia’s invasion was completely unprovoked.
